Birdsmouth Design-Build incorporated BioLOCK 2.0 into a new accessory building and ADU in southeast Portland, OR. The approximately 1,400 sqft structure houses a 600 sqft ADU above a garage and utility room, and is targeting Phius Zero certification with a focus on resilience against cold snaps, heat domes, smoke events, seismic events, and power and water disruptions. Solid Carbon supplied biochar additive for 50 cubic yards of concrete at a dose of 50 lb/CY, locking 2,500 lb of biochar into the foundation and reducing the embodied carbon of the pour. The build pairs low-embodied-carbon materials with on-site solar, battery storage, rainwater capture, and a pollinator-supporting native landscape. Construction began in March 2026 with completion expected by the end of the year.
